Sequoia’s fee-based, discretionary investment management combines our knowledge and experience regarding the marketplace and different investment concepts with your unique long-term and short-term goals. We don’t work with proprietary products so we are able to select from a wide range of options when aligning an appropriate asset allocation strategy with your goals and objectives. We can also assist with solutions to specific tax-benefit vehicles*, such as 529 plans, Roth IRAs and Annuities.
We believe that how investments are allocated between the different types of asset classes is one of the most important factors in whether or not a portfolio will earn over time the rate of return needed to meet your specific goals. Asset allocation also provides diversification and better resilience to market volatility, as the movement of individual positions has less effect on the overall performance of the portfolio.
The financial planning team familiarizes themselves with your short-term and long-term wealth management goals. This step is often accomplished via a financial plan, but can also be completed independent of a plan.
Working with you, we prepare a written investment policy statement. The IPS provides direction for the overall investment portfolio and identifies the following constraints:
- Expected return goals
- Risk tolerance (volatility of returns)
- Investment time horizon
- Spending/cash-flow requirements
- Investment manager evaluation criteria
Your lead financial planner works with Sequoia’s Investment Committee to develop a custom-tailored allocation strategy. There are many different categories of assets which may comprise any one asset allocation plan. Although new ones may be added at any time, some of the asset classes Sequoia uses include:
- Domestic growth equities (large & small)
- Domestic value equities (large & small)
- International equities (growth and value
- Special situations (alternative investments)
- Short-term bonds
- Intermediate and long-term bonds
Sequoia’s Service Excellence Group acts as your liaison to facilitate account creation and transfers. They generate the required documents, assist you in completing them, and send to you for review and signature. Once transfer paperwork is sent in for processing, assets transfer to your Sequoia account in approximately two weeks. This is an average based on our past experience.
Client portfolios are managed as an ongoing process, with formal rebalancing occurring periodically throughout the year. Continuous analysis enables the Investment Committee to review asset classes and funds regarding performance or management inconsistencies so that changes can be made where necessary. We also meet periodically with you to provide detailed performance reviews so you remain informed about the investment performance of your portfolio.
